HP Acquires Samsung Printer Business

October 6, 2016

HP announced recently a definitive agreement to acquire Samsung's printer business in a deal valued at $1.05 billion. The acquisition positions HP to disrupt this category by replacing copiers with superior multifunction printer (MFP) technology.

This is the largest print acquisition in HP's history and accelerates its growth opportunities in the segment, strengthens its leading laser printing portfolio that has been established with Canon, and paves the way for future printing innovation. It also creates new avenues for growth and greater profitability for partners as they expand managed print services as sales models shift from transactional to contractual.

Samsung's printer business also brings a compelling intellectual property portfolio of more than 6,500 printing patents and a world-class workforce that includes nearly 1,300 researchers and engineers with advanced expertise in laser printer technology, imaging electronics, and printer supplies and accessories to support continued innovation in print market solutions.

Acquiring Samsung's printer business will also strengthen HP's ability to service customers in global laser printing, a category where it has enjoyed a strong, mutually beneficial partnership with Canon for more than three decades. HP is confident this transaction will provide new opportunities to further strengthen and accelerate this highly valued relationship.

The acquisition is expected to be accretive in the first full year following closing, with cost synergies and a strong financial model. The transaction is expected to close within 12 months pending regulatory review and other customary closing conditions. After closing, Samsung has agreed to make a $100 million to $300 million equity investment in HP through open market purchases.

DocOrigin provides strong support for all HP printers and offers custom printer drivers to maximize the performance and quality of forms and documents being printed on HP printers.

vablet chooses DocOrigin to provide dynamic fillable forms integration and data collection

CAPE CORAL, FL – How do you improve a world-renowned, best-in-class mobile sales tool like vablet? You inject it with a little DocOrigin magic, of course!

Continuing its mission to provide the best all-around tool for sales professionals working in the field, Meiotic Inc., the innovative developer of vablet, a best in class business content management solution for mobile devices, announced a partnership with Eclipse Corporation. Eclipse is the exclusive distributor in North America of DocOrigin.

DocOrigin provides an intuitive form designer for the creation of dynamic fillable HTML and PDF forms. When combined with vablet, the solution provides on-site, off-line collection of data and signatures in the field.

Eclipse’s expertise in enterprise form design and data collection proved to be exactly what the development team at vablet needed in order to build this functionality into their flagship mobile application. With extensive capabilities built for companies in HIPAA compliant, SEC, or FDA regulated industries, vablet provides a secure, centralized repository for the storage, sharing and analysis of approved, up-to-the-minute sales collateral such as presentations, brochures, white papers and other files.

“vablet’s customers can now take advantage of dynamic fillable HTML and PDF form functionality – built to expand or collapse the form dynamically displaying only relevant fields and information. It’s a perfect fit for mobile devices where screen real estate is in short supply," explained Steve Luke, CEO of Eclipse Corporation. “Forms can be customized to display fields based on checkboxes, radio buttons or data entered into preceding fields. This improves the efficiency of the field representative. Quick and accurate data entry is essential to closing a sale.”

When the mobile device returns to an online status, data is immediately synced with customer management tools like Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, or the company’s CRM, EMR, or ERP of choice.

From collecting contact information at a trade show, to generating orders on the spot after a presentation, to capturing signatures on a contract, DocOrigin’s fillable form and data collection technology will allow mobile sales personnel using vablet technology to spend more time selling and less time entering data.

"This is the perfect evolution for vablet,” said Paul Pacun, founder and chief architect at vablet. “vablet’s data capture ability and DocOrigin’s dynamic forms take the sales rep and customer relationship to the next level, because sales reps can now do more on a tablet, at the most critical time, with or without an internet connection.”

About vablet

Since 2010, vablet has been providing powerful yet agile sales enablement solutions to make sales easier and more effective. Companies in over 50 countries use vablet to optimize how files are used in the field, to share files and media from anywhere, and to get clear visibility on file usage activities. vablet continues to innovate and address the needs of the mobile workforce. Konica Minolta Enhances Its Production Print Business in Korea

Konica Minolta announced recently that it has established the Group’s first dedicated production print sales company, Konica Minolta Pro Print Solutions Korea Ltd. (BPKR), in Seoul, Korea. BPKR has already started operating.

As part of its global strategy to promote its Production Print business (PP), Konica Minolta places great importance on Korea, the second largest market in Asia, after China. Against the backdrop of a drastic increase in sales of color MFPs in the Korean PP market, demand is growing for higher printing performance and higher levels of production of high-resolution and high-quality images.

While Konica Minolta did offer office equipment to Korean customers through local distributors, the company has made a decidedly critical shifting to direct sales, especially in the PP market, in which it sells digital printing and other printing systems.

With the establishment of the new company, Konica Minolta aims to offer support services for higher volume production printing, especially in Seoul, thereby securing the highest share of sales of digital printing systems on a unit basis in the Korean market. The company is also working in close cooperation with Kinko’s Korea Ltd., an on-demand printing company and a member of the Konica Minolta Group, to promote the PP business and expand its operations in the Korean market.

DocOrigin, Eclipse Corporation's flagship software for the creation of dynamic business documents, is fine tuned to work with Konica Minolta production print equipment, as well as both legacy and modern enterprise databases and resources. Easily integrate with line‐of‐business applications to create and generate affordable high-value documents that will increase your return on investment in Konica Minolta printers and systems.

Grabber Construction Products Chooses DocOrigin

We are pleased to announce the successful installation and implementation of DocOrigin at Grabber Construction Products, a leading distributor of quality construction products, based in Utah. Grabber came to us because they needed a replacement for Adobe/JetForm Central, which is past end of life and is no longer supported by Adobe. When Grabber's first attempt at replacement did not deliver the performance and features they needed, they evaluated and selected DocOrigin because the product was built from the ground up by the original JetForm developers.

At Eclipse, we have a unique insight into the needs and requirements of enterprise companies such as Grabber who are seeking to replace Central. After all, we have been developing forms and document generation software for 24 years, and we were able to build a comprehensive software package that delivers cutting-edge document generation features, using our customers' existing data sources. Customers like Grabber find our rapid migration features ensure the lowest cost and fastest implementation available.

This feature in particular is what impressed Grabber's Information Technology Manager, Kory Lewis. "When it became clear that Adobe/JetForm Central would no longer be supported with current operating systems and Oracle’s JD Edwards World software, we knew we needed to act fast," says Lewis, who oversees the production of millions of documents every month, including invoices, acknowledgements, quotes, pick-slips, purchase orders, statements and checks.

Grabber was so satisfied with DocOrigin's performance that they added EclipseFAX, our cloud-based fax solution. Currently, they’re evaluating our new Customer Communications Center with an eye to enhance their marketing campaigns and messaging, and to manage legal terms and conditions without engaging IT for ongoing projects.

US Postal Service posts $1.57 billion loss

The Postal Service on Tuesday reported a net loss of $1.57 billion for the three months ending June 30, compared with a loss of $586 million during the same period last year.

While shipping and packages posted revenue growth of 18 percent, that was offset by a drop in revenue for first-class mail of 5.5 percent, due largely to the expiration of the exigent surcharge put in place to offset losses through the recession. The April 10 expiration of the surcharge reduced revenue in the quarter by about $450 million, and will lower revenue by about $500 million for the fourth quarter and by almost $2 billion a year.

This has many pundits highlighting the need for Congress to overhaul the Post Office. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said the result is no surprise and is another sign that Congress must take action soon, when Congress returns from recess in September, to stabilize the “failing $1.4 trillion mailing industry.” Many feel that without congressional action, the Postal Service will remain unable to raise enough revenue to cover its costs.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has approved a measure and Carper wants to push legislation through the Senate. Carper introduced legislation nearly a year ago aimed at putting the Postal Service on firmer financial footing.

Did you know that DocOrigin has a number of features that could save postage cost? For example, our Intelligent Pagination feature can help reduce the number of pages needed for things like statements and invoices. Our Auto Distribution feature lets you print what you must, email with PDF attachment, or SMS with link to portal. DocOrigin’s data driven delivery features also work to reduce print and mail since we can take a batch job headed to the printer and pull out documents and pages where the recipient has recently changed their delivery preferences.

Click here to check out how Intelligent Pagination with DocOrigin saves 33 to 66% of surface area needed on multipage documents.

Xerox reportedly in talks to acquire R.R. Donnelley & Sons

Xerox, which plans to separate into two companies by the end of the year, is reportedly in talks to acquire R.R. Donnelley & Sons. While nothing official has been released, industry insiders suggest that Xerox Corp. would acquire R.R. Donnelley Co., founded in 1864 and based in Chicago, and merge some of it with its copier, printer and related-services business and the rest with its smaller business process outsourcing services.

R.R. Donnelley, the owner of the Edgar financial-statement wire service, announced it planned to split into three publicly traded companies last year. A deal with Xerox would negate that plan. The talks are at an early stage but a deal could be announced before Xerox's split is completed. Stock in both Xerox and R.R. Donnelley have jumped as a result.

HP launches new tools to make business printing more mobile, secure and productive

HP recently announced new mobile and business intelligence software to help business IT managers make their print environment more mobile, secure and productive. New offerings include mobile print software that makes printing from mobile devices to printers on a corporate network easy and accessible and new business intelligence tools that help IT understand and optimize their printer fleets for better performance.

Get Advantage

HP JetAdvantage Connect enables mobile devices to print to printers on the corporate network with a simple, intuitive PC-like print experience, without extra steps like opening a print app or sending an email to the print queue. It is also easier and less expensive for IT to deploy as print job rendering takes place on the mobile device, eliminating the need for a dedicated server, and IT can leverage the same tools used to configure and manage PC-based print infrastructure. Currently HP JetAdvantage Connect supports Android with iOS device support coming later in June. Support for other mobile platforms will be added in the future.

Get Insights

For HP Managed Print Services customers, HP is introducing a set of cloud-based business intelligence tools called HP JetAdvantage Insights that provides access to printer fleet data for customers with self-managed or partner-managed print environments, enabling them to maintain their printer fleets with greater efficiency. This transparent view of their printer fleet, along with predictive modeling to help prevent potential problems before they occur, empower customers to make informed decisions to ensure that their printer fleet is optimized for productivity, security and cost effectiveness.

These tools are available to all HP direct Managed Print Services customers at no additional cost.

OpenText Buys HP Exstream

In HP’s recent Q2 earnings conference call, President and CEO Dion Weisler commented on “the work we are doing around marketing to stimulate printing demand. We are shifting our marketing efforts from marketing printers to marketing printing.”

On June 2, HP announced new software that simplifies printing from mobile devices on a corporate network, and new IT management analytics tools to understand and optimize printer fleets for better performance. HP wasn't done making news in June with this announcement though — on June 20 OpenText would acquire the Customer Communications Management (CCM) assets from HP Inc., including HP Exstream, HP Output Management, HP TeleForm and HP LiquidOffice for customer communications management, process automation and document delivery solutions.

This followed a May acquisition by OpenText of HP TeamSite, HP MediaBin, HP Qfiniti, HP Explore, HP Aurasma, and HP Optimost.

To round out the month, on June 21 HP Inc. held a webcast to announce the update of its printing sales model, which included the announcement of a reduction in supplies inventory, causing the firm's stock to fluctuate wildly and spurring much discussion about the company's struggling printing business.
